History

Tuolumne County was one of the founding counties of

California in 1850. Parts of which were transferred to

Stanislaus County in 1854 and to Alpine County in 1864.

The name Tuolumne is of Indian origin and has different

meanings, like many stone houses or the land of the mountain

lions. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo wrote in his report to

California's first legislature that the word is "a falsification of the

indian word talmalamne ", translated as "group of stone

wigwams “or” people living in stone houses".

Two National Historic Landmarks in the county, the Columbia State Historic Park and the Parsons Memorial Lodge. A total of 35 buildings and sites of the counties are registered in the National Register of Historic Places.

According to the Census Bureau, the county has a total area of ​​5,889.6 km²; of which 5,788.6 km² is land and 101 km² (1.71%) is water.
